In The Spotlight: Meet Lindsey W.

THE FIT LIFT’s In The Spotlight category will interview active, inspiring women from all walks of life who demonstrate strength in many ways. Whether you've made small steps to lead a more healthy lifestyle or train like a beast, we want to celebrate YOU. We believe that by sharing our stories, we can help others to both start, and continue on the path of living a healthy lifestyle by leading by example.  If you would like to be featured on our blog, please email us.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lindsey for the first time last weekend.  Lindsey is an active mom of two and owner of the Calgary SE Hot Mama Fit.  Hot Mama Fit provides daily fitness classes for moms, expecting moms, or even entire families, in a comfortable and energetic atmosphere, where you can bring your little ones to class with you, and have them play while you get your sweat on.  Lindsey's passion for health, wellness and fitness is incredible.  But most of all, her love for spreading this passion on to her class participants, both big and little,  is so admirable.  Lindsey wholeheartedly believes in leading by example and showing how important staying active and making your health a priority is to our children. She has built a supportive community of participants who are determined, dedicated and proud to embrace their bodies for all that they are, and all they are capable of.

1. Provide us a brief introduction about who you are.

Lindsey Witzel - owner of Hot Mama Fit Calgary SE. I am a daughter, a mother, a wife and everything in between. I am a lover of fitness, a sucker for sweets and a strong supporter of cheesy jokes.

2. What does STRENGTH mean to you?

Strength, although elusive at times, is a quality that resides in all of us women. It is the dedication to keep going and the power to keep achieving. It's the beat in our hearts and the fire that moves our souls. I am a firm believer in strength in numbers and am constantly moved by a community of loving and supportive Mamas helping others recognize the strength within themselves.

3. What does BEAUTY mean to you?

Beauty is the perseverance to be the best and purest version of you as possible. There is no scale that measures beauty but rather it shines through kindness. It blossoms within as we open our hearts and extend our hand. Beauty is your outlook on life, your strength to keep fighting, keep moving and keep smiling. The most beautiful are the ones lifting and encouraging one another.

4. What inspires you? What is your driving force?

Easy. My Mamas!! I am surrounded every day by an incredible group of women who despite what is going on in their worlds, show up not only to sweat but to motivate, inspire and support the women of this city. While some days they arrive at class as the pillar of strength and ready to lift anyone who needs a boost, there are days when they show up defeated and lean on the others for the exact lift they were proud to give the day before. And from this alone, I have witnessed pure laughter from the Mamas on days when they needed it the most. I’ve seen tears of frustration pour from faces and a shoulder, quite literally, offered to calm the waves of our Mama emotions. And through it all, I’ve been moved and inspired by the true friendships that take shape.

To watch a community of like-minded women build each other up to achieve fitness goals together which in turn gives them a sense of family for so many who are new to Calgary with very little family support is my absolute driving force behind Hot Mama Fit! Well, that and the cuteness overload of watching a pile of kids doing burpees just like their Mamas!

5. What is your proudest accomplishment?

I think it’s safe to say my children are my proudest accomplishment. I am proud that they view our active and healthy lifestyle as a privilege and a blessing rather than a burden. They may be young but they are undoubtedly impressionable little beings.

6. What is your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge lies within pop culture and its relentless influence. I am happy to remind our community daily that we stay active and healthy because we love our bodies and not because bathing suit season is fast approaching. It is a tough battle to face, but I do see a progression of kick-butt Mamas feeling fit, fabulous and healthy regardless of the shapes of their bodies.

7. What is your mantra? What are your favorite words to live by?

“Smile and the world smiles back”

I love this because a quick grin from a stranger at a red light or a sympathetic smile from a parent as your toddler has a meltdown in aisle 3, has the power to change your outlook that day. And really, the world just needs more smiles.
